6th Grade

Spiritual/Bible:  Using the text from Bob Jones University, Redemption, God’s Grand Design, we discover the core of God’s plan through Bible history, Bible reading, question and answer format based on Christian Catechism and Bible memory work.  Through prayer and discussion we discover God’s plan for each of us as we learn to have personal relationship with God.

Reading:  We use both a reader from A Beka with short stories and chapter books such as A Father’s Promise.  Students are tested on comprehension and writing ability in test.  My goal is to help them see the deeper, underlying themes in literature and express these accurately.

Writing:  In addition to the writing taught through the Grammar class, writing is incorporated throughout the middle school curriculum in all subjects.  We focus on writing in our Reading/Literature classes as we practice our technical writing while we analyze the novels we read each quarter.

Math:  Using the A Beka sixth grade math text we focus on measures, factoring, fractions, decimals, percents, graphs, geometry, and algebra.

History/Social Studies:  Students use Heritage Studies 6 text from Bob Jones University.  We cover ancient history from Mesopotamia civilizations to those of Egypt, Israel, India, China, Greece, Rome, Mayas, Africa and early Middle Ages.  Students will also do a term paper in which they will receive careful instruction and guidance in this endeavor.  The primary focus in teaching history is to encourage students to see the past as a key to the future.  I also help them explore both sides of an issue, using logic and discernment to make decisions.

Science:  Emphasis for Science class is to explore, uncover and discover God’s creation through the application of critical thinking skills, the scientific method, and scientific inquiry while emphasizing the need for examining the results through a Biblical worldview.  Students are exposed to physical, life space and earth sciences through instruction and experiments.

Computer: These grades continue to review and expand on their goals from 3^rd and 4^th grade.  They begin the year by raising their words per minute goal in the typing program and continue furthering their knowledge of proper typing skills.  They learn and practice more formatting skills for word processing, and are also introduced to desktop publishing, spreadsheet and database programs, and slideshow presentations.  They are also introduced to Internet safety and lessons for browsing skills.
